8 – Icebergs in Disko Bay, close to the town of Ilulissat. About 10-20% of the iceberg is seen on the surface, the rest is underwater. 9 – An iceberg floats in front of the Eqip Sermia glacier.
1 – Giant icebergs in Disko Bay close to the town of Ilulissat. The icebergs
originate from the Sermeq Kujalleq (in Greenlandic) or Jakobshavn (in
Danish) glacier. The glacier is close to the town of Ilulissat on the west
coast of Greenland. It’s one of the fastest moving (and retreating) glaciers
in the world, moving about 20 meters (approx. 60 feet) a day, making it
a large contributor to rising sea levels. The ice fjord is a UNESCO world
heritage site. 2 – Elna Jensen with her son at their vegetable garden
in Sillisit. Nowadays with warmer conditions the people of Southern
Greenland can grow all kinds of crops. 3 – Malene Egede at work in her
garden outside Igaliku where she grows potatoes. 4 – Icebergs in the
Ilulissat Ice fjord. 5 – Icebergs in a channel between Greenland’s Eqip
Sermia glacier and the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, the most active glacier
in the Northern Hemisphere. 6 – The Sermeq Kujalleq (in Greenlandic)
or Jakobshavn (in Danish) glacier. 7 – Ole Guldager keeps bees in
Narsarsuaq. Beekeeping in Southern Greenland is a more recent
development.
