26 November 1965: France launches Asterix satellite
After the Second World War, in common with the Americans and the Soviets, French scientists conducted research into rockets inspired by German V2 technology. Veronique probe rockets were launched during the International Year of Geophysics in 1957. Created in 1961, the CNES (national space research centre) was tasked with coordinating French space activities. In 1965, France became the world's third space power when it successfully placed a satellite in orbit. Asterix was launched from the Algerian site of Hammaguir using the Diamant rocket in what was the crowning moment of a project championed by President De Gaulle.
