Less than 8 months after President Kennedy's historic "We choose to go to the Moon" declaration, the USA won the race to the Moon. On 21 July 1969, images of the first steps taken on the lunar surface by Neil Armstrong and Buz Aldrin were broadcast to millions of television viewers around the world. Apollo 11 would be followed by five more missions through to December 1972, putting twelve men on the Moon in all. Only Apollo 13 failed to complete its mission since an exploding oxygen tank forced the crew to return to Earth.
