Ferrofluids

Ferrofluids are solutions of magnetic nanoparticles 3 to 20 nm across. They have many practical applications (CD pick-up heads, magnetic inks, medical imaging, etc.). Length: 45".

In the first part of the film, a colloidal suspension of Fe3O4 nanoparticles reacts to an external magnetic field. The instability of the field leads to the appearance of points that overcome the force of gravity and the surface tension of the fluid. The second part of the film shows that the ferrofluid is dense enough to make a penny float when attracted by a magnet.
