Here, the atoms are laid out in a circle on a surface. They are moved one by one with a scanning probe microscope, which combines a broad range of microscopic techniques. The probe moves over a surface at a very short distance and the interaction produced between the probe and the surface of the sample is recorded. This enables the surface to be visualised.
