From a macroeconomic viewpoint, some see nanotechnologies as the next industrial revolution. Investment is massive: 7 billion euros in 2004, including 3.8 billion of public funds. With 155 million euros, France is in 6th place worldwide and 5th for patents and publications on the subject. On the microeconomic level, because of the increase in public and private investment and the number of companies and patents, nanotechnologies are increasingly influencing our socioeconomic world, bringing new training programmes, new areas of research, new occupations and new opportunities for interaction between fields that were formerly unconnected (NBIC) These developments go beyond research, industry and economics, since they affect our society as a whole.
