Welcome!

Aluminium comes from bauxite, a red ore that resembles the soil on Mars. Now more than ever, aluminium -- this material of modern times -- is linked in our minds with the aeronautic adventure. In the 19th century this extremely lightweight metal was as valuable as gold, but its history was quite unknown. Discover some of the scintillating aspects of this site:

Discover an interactive Mendeleev periodic table to “dance” among the elements,
Next, look into a microscope and see an aluminium atom,
Leaf through a display of unique objects, like this Russian flask from World War I or the “Jamais contente” (Never Settle)…
Slip behind the scenes of this exhibition to see the installation of microlights in the Cité,
Or find out how aluminium will play an important role in the exploration of Mars.

In sum, this “clay transformed into silver” — the name given to aluminium when it was presented at the 1885 World Exhibition in Paris — is yours to discover.
