Each of the earth's 500,000 islands is a world in miniature.
Their flora and fauna have evolved to produce new or endemic species (not existing anywhere else).
As each island is a unique environment imposing its own particular constraints, the species which originate there are specific. This process is called speciation and is very active in the islands because of their isolation.
But this isolation and the small size of their populations make these species particularly vulnerable.
