Réunion and the Mascarene Islands
The Mascarene archipelago extends eastwards from Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean. One of its islands, Réunion, thanks to its mountainous relief, has an exceptional natural heritage with 659 endemic species of flowering plants. It still has 40,000 hectares of primary forest.
However, in 25 years, the island will have nearly a million inhabitants. How will it adapt to this new demographic situation when its coastline is already highly developed and exploited? Réunion is listed as one of the ten islands containing the most threatened species in the world.
