Walkers' locomotion

AT-AT Walkers (All Terrain Armored Transports) belong to the major vehicles appearing in the Star Wars saga. Their size and power strike at the enemy just like Hannibal's elephants, which astounded the Roman legions at the battle of Cannes. However, unlike elephants, Walkers move forward using just one foot at a time! That's rather logical considering that to walk in an completely stable way requires at least 5 feet . The size of Walkers can be estimated based on a scene in "The Empire Strikes Back" in which Luke Skywalker climbs up on one using a cable: it must be more than 80 feet (25 meters) high. Such a large size, with most of its mass concentrated in the upper section, is tantamount to inherent instability, especially on uneven terrain. A Walker is therefore easily tipped over and any fall would have disastrous consequences. Seems like the Empire doesn't have only good ideas.
