BUILDING

6. Materials and innovations

The list of materials used in construction is impressive to behold. However, the materials used the most worldwide are still clay, concrete, steel and wood.
Nevertheless, that should not overshadow the leaps of innovation being made in materials science. Development is being driven forward by architects and builders who want higher performance materials which are cheaper and lighter.
Traditional materials are also being improved, augmented with sensors. Physical and chemical procedures alter their performance and allow them to be used for new purposes. Cutting-edge materials or materials that had been neglected up until now are making their entrance. There are many different designs to meet contemporary requirements.
